Something fishy!

Today for work, I saw someone spell fisticuffs as "fisty cuffs" and a) that is adorable and b) it also makes me realize what a strange word fisticuffs is!

So naturally I looked it up.

c. 1600, fisty cuffes, from fist (n.) + cuff (n.) "a blow", with the form perhaps in imitation of handiwork.

Well! That's such a boring etymology, but... nice to see the spelling returned to something more like the original!

I said this on fedi and a friend's response has been delighting me ever since:

I always misread it as fishticuffs, so always had an image in my head of some kind of betta fish boxing, complete with gloves over fins

That made me giggle. They're an artist so I asked if they would draw this some time. I am wondering how a fish gets boxing gloves on its fins...

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for...

  • Thomann and Sweetwater. Minor grumps at Thomann for having a US site that looks tempting until you find out that shipping and tariffs are added at checkout. Major grumps at my old standby, Musician's Friend, whose site is totally broken when seen from Europe. Major grumps at ME for not having installed a VPN yet.
  • Online filk circles. NO thanks to the weird audio problems I was having tonight during Eurofilk. But I got one song (The Stuff that Dreams are Made Of) out. (I wrote it for my father, who died 26 years ago. And Father's Day is this Sunday.)

Not feeling terribly thankful today. Sorry.

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fics/fanart/fanvids/fancrafts/podfics/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Contemplating July activities

After a couple of years of really struggling with mood and creativity, between burnout and family issues and god knows what (and I know I've been hard to deal with in fandom, at times), things are suddenly ... good! I can write again, I'm signing up for exchanges, whatever has been blocking me has gotten a whole lot better.

July is my birthday month, therefore Best Month, obviously, and I would really like to try to do some kind of "post a short fic every day" thing if I can make it work. Unfortunately I'm suffering a dearth of appropriate challenges, because of course now that I want one and have the mental bandwidth to do something with one, daily month-long prompt challenges and/or bingo card challenges for July are nowhere in sight. The closest thing is July Break Bingo, but I've asked for cards for this before, and I just ... never really do anything with them; I appreciate that it exists, but I think I need more of a - I don't know, social element to it, I guess? Less open-ended, more directed? Their cards just don't really click with me somehow. And I can't find a Tumblr prompt/whump/whatever themed promptfest thing for July.

So I'm kicking around a few different ideas. Why not throw it out to a completely nonbinding poll?

Haha, I just signed up for a free online Harvard course on a whim,[1] and having spent the last few months in the Three Billion Comments Club on [community profile] sid_guardian, naturally I'm diligently replying to people's comments in the discussion sections of the course, too. What could possibly go wrong?

(You don't have to reply to everyone, china! This is not your circus! /o\)

For the start of Pride month, a sticker from NerdyKeppie's "Proud to the Bone 2" pin collection.

And my tiny printout of the show flyer, since we don't get hard copy tickets anymore.

(It's a bit hard to write this from the perspective of it being the week Before, but I'm trying.)

This was a fairly busy week! It was a good week, and I made it through the first big rush of busy, but still feel like I have a lot to catch up on. FastCAT, the gardens, and the concert were all really good. Work was average to fine. I do hope to do more reading and writing next week, since it feels like that's where progress is most stagnant.

Goals for the week:

  • I did post my book reviews for May
  • I started, but didn't finish, catching up on DW
  • I watered my plants
  • I read more of Maeve Fly
  • I did my [community profile] getyourwordsout check-in: 1666 words written in May, bringing the ytd total to 58483
  • We went to the Botanic Gardens with my mom and Taylor
  • We did Bella's FastCAT
  • I talked to mom and saw her briefly on her birthday
  • We went to the Aesthetic Perfection show
  • I wrote up and posted my June writing goals
  • I printed off some short stories for my mom
  • I put my laundry away
  • I still haven't cancelled the dentist appointment
  • I still didn't make it to the bank
  • I still didn't finish part 3 of the snowflake outline
  • Alex did get rent paid

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 3/7
  • Physical Activity - 3/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 2/7 - one day of over 1000, one day of over 500
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 5/7
  • Personal Writing - 5/7
  • Other Creative Things - 3/7
  • Reading - 6/7 - mostly I started reading Maeve Fly, and read some Duma Key with Alex
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday I had some youtube in the background at work; Monday half-watched some exploration videos; Tuesday had storm chasing and abandoned place videos in the background; Wednesday was more storm chasing in the background; Thursday we watched some storm chasing (they found an impressive tornado!) and I listened to music (mostly Aesthetic Perfection in preparation for the show on Friday); Friday we went to the concert; Saturday listened to music (mostly Whorticulture, Solar Fake, and Aesthetic Perfection.)
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 5/7

Total words written: 4712 on my book reviews and writing plans

I am still very sad, and I'm trying to strike the balance between "being gentle with myself" and "wallowing."

The urge to slap CVS into next week

So I went to pick up an ungodly amount of meds from the cvs near the parents' they texted me yesterday about 2 that it was too early to fill. I get there and get the others but NOT my toujeo insulin. Where is this?
CVS - um it's on hold
Me - you texted me about everything else why not this?
CVS - we don't know
Me - WHY is it on hold?
CVS - you have to get in another line to ask that question

Me- goes to other line, muttering

CVS - we don't know WHY it's on hold
Me - is it covered because my insurance keeps threatening to kick this one out of formulary.
CVS -yes, we can fill it now or do you want to come back?
Me - i live 18 miles away. FILL IT (took them over an hour to manage it which should be a good thing because they didn't have the humalog yesterday. You know the most common insulin out there)

I keep saying I'll be doing a pride month book rec and I keep failing so here have all the LGBT books I've read this year (amazon links, no covers because I'm tired and in pain)

Books:

Under This Red Rock YA, horror/mystery, heavy on mental health issues

Disco Witches of Fire Island magic realism 1980s so this is steeped in both the casual sex scene and the horrors of the rise of AIDS (so this is not really a happy story)

Graphic Novels

Carmilla: The First Vampire Chinese-American retelling of Carmilla (in two volumes)

The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich fantasy rom-com

here.Les Normaux: A Dark and Dreamy Tale of Forbidden Love, Dare to Be Seduced by the Supernatural (Les Normaux, 1) supernatural romance webtoon

Earthdivers, Vol. 1: Kill Columbus

If you have questions or want to chat about any of them please do

What I Just Finished Reading:

The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan PI mystery very much enjoyed this (no having the sleuth do something stupid to get in danger!)

West By God - horror, this was...honestly it could have been a journalist mystery without any supernatural elements and been better for it.

What I am Currently Reading:

Anima rising - a good reads Frankenstein retelling giveaway win but also real person fanfic of Klimt and others and so far it's not great.

Dark Entry - a short suspense/horror novel I got last year

A Spell to Wake the Dead - a YA horror arc that is...good but man one of the main characters I want to drop in the ocean

What I Plan to Read Next: Something for the popsugar challenge probably or one of the books I won from Goodreads
petra: CGI Obi-Wan Kenobi with his face smudged with dirt, wearing beige, visible from the chest up. A Clone Trooper is visible over one shoulder. (Obi-Wan - Clones ftw)

Make an ass out of u and me (1431 words) by Petra
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars - All Media Types
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker, Depa Billaba/Obi-Wan Kenobi/Shaak Ti/Quinlan Vos, Aayla Secura & Anakin Skywalker
Characters: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aayla Secura, Quinlan Vos, Shaak Ti, Depa Billaba
Additional Tags: A+ Jedi Pedagogy, Polyamory, POV Outsider
Summary:

Anakin has the most boringly perfect master in the entire Jedi Order. Some masters go on interesting missions; Obi-Wan does diplomatic missions where he sits at a table and says, "Hm, well…" a lot till he gets his way. Some masters have showy, dangerous lightsaber styles; Obi-Wan does Soresu, which is as purely defensive as anything anyone has ever devised. Some masters are fully-rounded people who drink and laugh and dance; Obi-Wan stays in with his three best friends and talks about philosophy all night, because he is a perfect Jedi, and so are they.
